About Muharram
Muharram is the first month of the Hijri calendar and one of the four sacred months. The Islamic New Year is generally observed through reflection rather than celebrations prescribed as religious rites.
Fasting on Ashura
Authentic hadith encourage fasting on Ashura. Many Muslims also fast a day before or after it. Anyone with illness, pregnancy, medication needs or other concerns should seek appropriate religious and medical guidance.
Important reminder
Practices and commemorations can differ among Muslim communities. Present differences respectfully and consult trusted scholars for detailed religious guidance.
