Umrah is a journey of worship, not a race through a checklist. Learn the sequence before travelling, verify current entry and permit requirements through official Saudi channels, and ask a qualified scholar about personal religious circumstances. This independent guide provides orientation; it does not replace a fatwa or official instruction.
The sequence at a glance: prepare → enter Ihram at the applicable miqat → recite the talbiyah → perform seven circuits of Tawaf → pray and drink Zamzam where safely possible → perform seven passages of Sa’i → complete with halq or taqsir.

1. Prepare before travelling
Confirm that your passport, permission to enter Saudi Arabia, accommodation and transport arrangements are valid for your exact dates. Requirements can change, so use official sources rather than an old social-media post. Learn the rites before departure and save essential documents offline. 2. Know your miqat before the journey
The applicable miqat is determined by the route on which you approach Makkah. A traveller arriving by air should be ready before the aircraft reaches the boundary; changing into the garments is not itself the intention. 3. Enter the state of Ihram
Prepare, form the intention at the correct point and begin the talbiyah. From that point, observe the restrictions of Ihram. Men use the prescribed simple garments; women wear modest normal clothing that meets Islamic requirements rather than a special uniform. Do not delay learning the restrictions until after the intention.
4. Travel to Masjid al-Haram calmly
Continue the talbiyah, secure your documents and agree on a meeting point with companions. At the mosque, follow current signs, barriers and staff directions. Access routes can change according to prayer times and crowd conditions. Never push toward a gate, the Black Stone or another sacred point.
5. Perform seven circuits of Tawaf
Begin in line with the Black Stone, keep the Kaaba to your left and complete seven counter-clockwise circuits. The rite is not dependent on touching or kissing the Black Stone. 6. What follows Tawaf
Complete the acts associated with Tawaf according to reliable guidance without blocking walkways or forcing access to crowded locations. Drink Zamzam when safely available. If congregational prayer begins, follow mosque directions and resume according to informed guidance.
7. Perform Sa’i from Safa to Marwah
Start at Safa. Safa to Marwah is passage one, and the seventh passage ends at Marwah. Walk at a sustainable pace and make remembrance and personal supplication. Read the complete Sa’i guide, including counting and mobility considerations.
8. Complete Umrah with halq or taqsir
Men complete the rite by shaving or shortening the hair as applicable; women trim a small amount according to reliable guidance. Do not assume Ihram restrictions have ended before this step is completed. See the halq and taqsir guide.
When to stop and ask
Seek qualified guidance if you passed the miqat without Ihram, became uncertain about the number of circuits, experienced menstruation or illness, lost consciousness, had to interrupt a rite, or believe an Ihram restriction was broken. Do not rely on a stranger’s hurried answer for a question affecting the validity of worship.
