Tawaf consists of seven counter-clockwise circuits around the Kaaba, beginning and ending in line with the Black Stone. Preparation matters: a calm pilgrim who knows the route can concentrate on worship without stopping abruptly or following a phone through a dense crowd.
Before entering the Tawaf flow
- Confirm the religious requirements for the Tawaf you intend.
- Use the level and entrance currently assigned by mosque authorities.
- Secure loose clothing, valuables and bags.
- Agree on an outside meeting point before a group separates.
- Choose an accessible route when health or mobility requires it.
Where a circuit begins
Each circuit begins in line with the Black Stone corner. Keep the Kaaba on your left and travel with the counter-clockwise flow. Use the building markers and surrounding movement to orient yourself without stopping in an active lane.
How to count seven circuits
Crossing the starting line completes a circuit. Use a simple finger count, discreet counter or seven-item method that does not distract from worship. If you lose count, do not choose randomly; follow the reliable rule you have learned or ask qualified guidance.
The Black Stone
Touching or kissing the Black Stone is not required for Tawaf. When access is unsafe, indicate toward it according to reliable guidance and continue. Never push, argue, pull another pilgrim or reverse direction to reach it.
Rukn al-Yamani
Follow established guidance without forcing access. If you cannot reach it safely, continue the circuit. Sacred etiquette never justifies harming another worshipper or obstructing the flow.
Remembrance and supplication
Remember Allah, recite Quran and make appropriate personal supplication. There is no need to assign an invented mandatory dua to every circuit. A short sincere dua made with attention is better than reading a long text while colliding with others.
Men’s practices during Tawaf
Certain practices such as uncovering the right shoulder or walking briskly apply only in particular circumstances. Learn where they apply before starting; do not copy another pilgrim without understanding the rite being performed.
If congregational prayer begins
Follow mosque staff and join the prayer without blocking movement. After prayer, resume according to the informed guidance you follow. Note where you stopped so uncertainty does not multiply.
Wudu, illness and interruptions
Scholarly rulings concerning purity, bleeding, unavoidable contact and interrupted circuits require care. If wudu is lost, illness occurs or the route is closed, leave safely and ask an authorised scholar rather than arguing in the crowd.
After seven circuits
Complete the connected acts according to reliable guidance. Do not force access behind Maqam Ibrahim or block others; prayer can be performed in an appropriate available location. Drink Zamzam when safely accessible, then proceed toward Safa for Sa’i.
Accessibility
Wheelchair and mobility-device routes may be located on designated levels and can change with operations. Follow current signs. A longer safe circuit is preferable to attempting an unsuitable congested area.
