Sa’i commemorates Hajar’s search for water and is performed between Safa and Marwah. It begins at Safa and ends at Marwah after seven passages. Understanding the count before starting prevents one of the most common and exhausting mistakes.
Before beginning
Complete the required preceding rite according to reliable guidance, then proceed toward Safa using the current signs. If separated from companions, meet outside the moving lanes rather than stopping at an entrance.
At Safa
Begin at Safa with the established remembrance and supplication. It is not necessary to climb, push toward a precise point or remain so long that others cannot approach. Face the Qibla where appropriate and begin the first passage toward Marwah.

A round trip is therefore two passages, not one. The seventh ends at Marwah.
The green-light area
Men who are able follow the established practice of moving more briskly between the marked points. Women continue at their normal pace. Anyone for whom faster movement creates danger should not strain or collide with others.
What to say during Sa’i
Make remembrance, recite Quran and ask Allah for lawful personal needs. There is no compulsory different dua for every passage. Learn a small number of sound remembrances and understand their meanings.
Wudu and purity questions
The requirements for Sa’i are not identical in every respect to Tawaf. Because personal situations differ, learn the applicable rulings beforehand and ask a qualified scholar if menstruation, bleeding or loss of wudu creates uncertainty.
Rest and hydration
Maintain a sustainable pace. Rest at a safe edge or designated space rather than in a moving lane. Watch for dizziness, chest discomfort, confusion and severe fatigue, especially in children, older adults and pilgrims with chronic illness.
Wheelchairs and mobility devices
Use designated lanes and obey staff directions. Companions should avoid sudden turns, secure loose fabric and keep feet and bags clear of wheels. Confirm rental or assistance arrangements through current official services.
After the seventh passage
At Marwah, complete Umrah with halq or taqsir according to the applicable guidance. Do not begin normal activities prohibited in Ihram until the rite has been properly completed.
If the count or sequence went wrong
Write down what happened while it is fresh: where you began, how many passages you are sure about and whether you left the area. Take those facts to a qualified scholar rather than relying on a guess.
